Welcome to Applied Clinical Nutrition!

Chiropractic and nutrition are hallmarks to great health and I am so excited to add Applied Clinical Nutrition to my clinical practice and so glad you decided to look at this page. If you are a patient of mine or possibly a future patient, then you know that I am always on the quest to find the most effective ways to stay healthy and to help as many people as possible achieve the health of their dreams. This is a long page and has a lot of information, but keep reading because it may change your life for the better forever!

First a Little Background

When I first began as a chiropractor many years ago I saw many “miracles” in practice. People getting better with only a few chiropractic visits, couples wanting to get pregnant and couldn’t due to blockage of nerve flow from the pelvic bones and after a few treatments their body’s organ function turned back on. Children with asthma improved without the need for inhalers. People who had medically diagnosed diseases for years getting better from chiropractic alone, you get the picture. Now I want to put up a disclaimer in that “I do not treat diagnosed diseases or conditions” that is what the medical profession does. I treat “people” that have diseases or conditions.

Well times have changed, chiropractic technology has gotten better, I have become a much better chiropractor and yet I began to see far less miracles happening anymore. People are requiring more adjustments to get better and they don’t seem to hold their adjustments as well. I have questioned the reasoning and searched for the answers for the benefit of my own health and for the health of my patients. There were several elements keeping the body from operating at its maximum potential. I have broken these down to what I call “The Seven Pillars of Health”.

What are the seven pillars of health? They are individual systems within the body that work by themselves and can have effects on every other system of the body making health a real challenge when several of the pillars become compromised. The first pillar is the Endocrine or Hormonal System. The second is Glycemic Management or Sugar Handling. The third pillar is pH Bioterrain or mineral balance. The fourth pillar is Inflammation and Immune Burdens. The fifth pillar is Circulatory or Cardiovascular. The sixth pillar is Digestive Potency and the seventh pillar is Structural.

What I have found is that we are no longer getting the proper nutrition that we once were. The foods aren’t as nutritious as they once were. We eat more processed and refined foods, overcooked foods and staples of so called food items that are no longer perishable (a Twinkie comes to mind). Over time this has reduced our body’s capability to repair or replace itself effectively. After a given time, the body “clinically” breaks down and you begin to have symptoms. If this doesn’t change for the better then you begin to see chronic disease and sometimes it becomes irreversible. When the body no longer has the right replacement parts (vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids and essential fatty acids) you cannot rebuild the DNA and RNA sequences so your body’s cellular makeup begins to breakdown (aging) or mutates (cancer). A few cells aren’t very noticeable but a few million and you will see chronic disease processes. It’s like a car manufacturer that runs out of nuts and bolts or specific engine parts or wheels. You could still build a car but it might not run right or it begins to fall apart soon after it hits the road.

The good news is that if you had excellent health sometime in your life then your DNA (blueprints) are okay and that you have the ability to be healthy. What you have done over the years is to not give yourself the proper building materials to rebuild a better genetic copy of yourself so you begin to break down in one or more pillars. The good news is if we can figure out what nutritional deficiencies are stressing the body, know what the body is asking for and can deliver the right “parts”, the body is dynamic enough to begin the repair process and sometimes restore health and vitality to where you were before things went awry.

More good news is that it may have taken some of you decades to get into trouble but quite often it doesn’t take so long to fix. It can be as little as three months to a year to become actively stable. Of course you may have to make dietary changes for the better in order to prevent this from reoccurring. What I have been looking for and have found is a way to systematically determine what stressors are affecting the body from operating at its best and then systematically knowing how to begin the repair process and lastly, have a way to monitor the outcome. Welcome Applied Clinical Nutrition.

The Seven Pillars of Health

What are the seven pillars of health?

They are individual systems within the body that work by themselves and can have effects on every other system of the body making health a real challenge when several of the pillars become compromised.

Endocrine System

The endocrine system is a network of glands that release hormones that influences every part of your body.

For example it controls how your heart beats, how your bones and tissues grow, even your ability to make a baby.

It plays a vital role in whether or not you develop diabetes, thyroid disease, growth disorders, sexual dysfunction, and a host of other hormone-related disorders.

Many malfunctions of the endocrine system can be brought back to regulate normally over time with Applied Clinical Nutrition.

Digestion

Digestion

Digestion starts at the mouth and traverses through the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines and finally the colon.

The digestive system doesn’t just break down food, it also helps with endocrine and immune system responses.

Heartburn, indigestion, reflux, GERD, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease and allergies are many digestive disorders that respond well with natural treatments.

Cardiovascular

Cardiovascular

The cardiovascular system consists of the heart and blood vessels.

It delivers oxygen and nutrients to the organs and tissues and carries waste products to the organs responsible for elimination.

One in every four deaths is due to cardiovascular disease so it is important that we understand what the warning signs are and how this disease is preventable.

Fast or slow heart rates, irregular heart beats, headaches, burning in the soles of the feet and calves, shortness of breath, bruising easily, anemia and ringing in the ears are potential warning signs.

Glycemic Management

Glycemic Management

Otherwise known as sugar handling, it is important that the body be able to process and utilize sugar properly.

The pancreas is the major organ and the liver and adrenals are the secondary organs that help the body deal with sugar.

When the body doesn’t process sugar properly, psychological and energy complaints begin to surface.

Craving sweets, shaky when skipping meals, irritability, mood swings, tiredness even depression could be signs of sugar handling issues.

Inflammation & Immune Burdens

Inflammation & Immune Burdens

Inflammation in the body is a factor in more than 25,000 diseases. Acute and chronic immune system burdens contribute to inflammation.

Any tissue type with -itis added to it means that there is inflammation. Any tissue in the body can become inflamed and this is due to a change in state from healthy to unhealthy.

Most are simply aches and pains that people associate with getting older, others are an immune system response.

Finding the cause of the inflammation and immune burdens is half the battle. Correction of them leads to better health.

pH Bioterrain

pH Bioterrain

pH and bioterrain are often underlooked as causes of health issues.

Changes in pH (acid/alkaline balance) in the digestive system are one of the reasons why people develop more health issues as they get older.

Bioterrain is the biological status of the cells and how they interact with our environment.

Changes that occur can manifest in physiological changes in our appearance. Thinning hair, loss of the outer third of our eyebrows, coated tongues, bloated bellies are just some of the changes that we see.

Conditions like allergies, digestive disorders, increase in sickness, low energy, abdominal bloating, sleep issues and a whole host of other problems can be due to these pH imbalances.

Structural

Structural

Structurally it is important that we have a sound musculoskeletal system (skeleton and connective tissue).

Poor posture and weak muscles advance the normal aging process known as arthritis. Injuries to the spine and joints change our static and dynamic motion and can compromise the communication of our nervous system.

Sprains/strains, muscle pulls, inflexibility, poor posture, repetitive stress injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome are just some of the problems that can affect our structure.

When our structure is compromised it can affect not just our motion but can affect our other organ systems as seen in various research studies.

  • A: Applied Clinical Nutrition is probably very different from anything you may have experienced before. It is a non-invasive proven system of analyzing the body to determine underlying causes of ill health. The result can lead to adjustments that hold better and an overall improvement in your health. Our bodies are designed to heal themselves. That isn’t to say we make it easy. We live in a world where we are exposed to physical and mental stresses every day. From high stress jobs to relationships, chemicals in our foods and environment, our bodies are put under tremendous stress.

If I were to analyze your body using Applied Clinical Nutrition without an explanation you may find it strange or mysterious. I felt similarly when I first encountered it and, therefore, have studied it and applied it to myself to see if it really worked. I am happy to be the sacrificial guinea pig. I am happy I did because it has helped me greatly improve my own health and with Applied Clinical Nutrition, I may be able to help you improve yours.

The addition of Applied Clinical Nutrition to your chiropractic program supports the extraordinary properties of the human cells and tissues to bring about healing and health changes exactly as nature intended. After all, our bodies are designed to heal themselves. It is important for you to understand Applied Clinical Nutrition because it is the foundation upon which I base my recommendations, and if you don’t understand it you may be less likely to follow through with my advice.

To put it simply, if you don’t follow through with my advice, you probably won’t change for the better, you know that and I know that, that is why you are reading this page. If your plan is stay in ill health and stay at the status quo, why begin in the first place? Stop reading and close this page and surf elsewhere on the internet.

The good news is that by using Applied Clinical Nutrition, most clients’ experience 90% or better improvement in their overall health.

  • A: If I were to hook you up to an electro-cardiograph machine and take a reading, that would make perfect sense to you, right? What is actually happening during that procedure? Electrical energy from the heart is running over the wires. This electrical energy makes the electrocardiograph record the energy pattern in the form of a graph or chart. We could then study this graph and tell you what it all means. Instead of connecting electrodes to the specific points being tested, the practitioner contacts these points with his/her own hand. With the other hand, he/she will test the muscle of your extended arm. If the reflex being contacted is active, the nervous system will respond by reducing energy to the extended arm and the arm will weaken and drop. This drop signifies underlying stress or dysfunction, which may be affecting your health.

  • A: A: Our next step is to test specific high quality nutritional formulas against those weak areas to find which ones bring the reflexes back to strength.

Clinical experience tell us that when we have found the correct nutritional formulas, as indicated by this procedure, and when we work out a highly personalized nutritional schedule, we have accomplished the most important first step of supporting the underlying deficiency or imbalance that caused the reflex to be active in the first place. By following the program as precisely as possible, you are well on your way to restoring normal function and improving your health.

    It’s that simple!

We use applied clinical nutrition to address the causes of the problem, so that the body can regain the ability to heal and support itself.

  • A: A: First of all, Designed Clinical Nutrition is not “over-the- counter” vitamins. Over-the- counter vitamins are pharmaceutically engineered chemical fractions of vitamin structures reproduced in a laboratory. They are not “whole food,” and the body does not actually recognize these as anything even vaguely beneficial (to put it mildly).

Because they are not made from whole foods, over-the- counter vitamins lack the essential synergistic elements normally present in WHOLE foods.

An example of a whole food would be carrots. Carrots are high in the “Vitamin A Complex”.

“Complexes” are something made up of many different parts that work together. Synthetic vitamin A does not contain the whole Vitamin A Complex found in nature. So, if we were looking for a food high in Vitamin A, carrots might be one of our choices.

If you were deficient in any of the components of the Vitamin A Complex you would be wise to seek out a formula that was made from whole foods that were rich in this complex – not from chemicals re engineered in a laboratory to look like one part of the Vitamin A Complex and erroneously labeled, “Vitamin A”.

Vitamins that are commonly being used today generally only need to have a small percentage of their actual content derived from natural sources to be labeled “natural”. If they are not derived from whole foods, they often make you even more deficient and nutritionally out-of- balance. They can create other health problems because they do not contain all of the co-factors found in nature that make the vitamins work properly.

“Designed Clinical Nutrition” is exactly that: designed (especially prepared based on a specific plan) clinical (pertaining to the results received in clinical use or actual practice on huge numbers of clients over many years) nutrition (real food, designed by nature to enable the body to repair itself and grow healthfully). It is whole food in a tablet, capsule or powder, concentrated in a vacuum, cold- process system that preserves all of the active enzymes and vital components that make it work as nature intended. These real food formulas have been designed to match the needs of the body, as determined by the positive response shown when tested against the active Nutrition Response Testing reflexes that were found on your individual analysis. These are nutrients you are simply not getting, or not assimilating, in your current diet. These deficiencies may be a result of your past personal eating habits and routines, and to a large extent, to the lack of quality in the foods commercially available in grocery stores and restaurants today.

  • A: One example of a designed clinical nutrition formula that we use is called “Catalyn”. This product is produced by starting with a wide variety of carefully chosen organically grown vegetables, taking the water and fiber out using a vacuum, low heat process, without heating or cooking the vegetables, and then utilizing the concentrated food to make Standard Process Catalyn tablets.

The key to this whole procedure is the way it is done, using the “Standard Process” method:

Standard Process nutrients are derived from plants grown on their own farms, in soil free of pesticides – no chemicals are ever used. Ph.D.’s check the soil before the seeds are sown, to make sure of the fertility of the soil – and even the weeding is done by hand.

The machinery involved in the processing of these products is made exclusively of glass and stainless steel.

The temperature used in processing harvested plants is never raised above the point of 90 degrees Fahrenheit, so that the active ingredients are not cooked; they remain active and alive and have a very long shelf life.

Your vitality and energy is derived from live food. Most foods today are dead or are not really foods at all – as in boxed cereals, canned vegetables, soda pop, etc. You can readily understand the difference between dead, devitalized pseudo-foods, with the synthetic or isolated vitamins on the one hand and “Designed Clinical Nutrition” and a diet of real foods on the other.

  • A: Having been designed through decades of clinical use on tens of thousands of clients, and on clients from many different types of health care practitioners, you can be assured that Nutrition Response Testing is capable of evaluating and possibly solving your health concerns.

A complete analysis can be done on each client on each subsequent visit, thereby revealing the next layers of dysfunction so these can also be addressed and supported.

In this way, each client gets completely individualized handling in the correct sequence for his or her body.

Very much like opening a combination lock, you must use the right numbers in the right sequence and in the right direction at the right time – then the lock opens. By following the correct sequence as revealed through Nutrition Response Testing, you don’t “shot-gun” your diet or supplements. With a correctly done NRT analysis, we can determine the correct food formulas for you – designed to give your body the best possible chance of getting well and staying well.

  • A:

    • If you have one or more health conditions that won’t go away.
    • If you find your adjustments don’t last as long as you think they should.
    • If you have visited doctors, or even alternative practitioners, but the results were not what you expected or hoped for.
    • If your health conditions are interfering with your life, maybe your career, family, or even your finances.
    • If you find that, in spite of all your efforts you just don’t feel as good as you think you could. Are you not sleeping well, always tired….
  • A: Depending on your needs your diet may change very little. Testing may however, uncover allergies to foods, a build-up of heavy metals or other things that may mean you need to change some of the foods you eat or things you expose yourself too in your environment. Applied Clinical Nutrition works best when the customize program is adhered to because it is based on what your body is saying it does or does not need.

  • A: Every person is different and healing takes place at its own rate. However, many patients see and feel results in as little as 4 to 6 weeks. The faster recoveries occur most often in those who have closely adhered to their customized nutrition program. Applied Clinical Nutrition has been found to be a repeatable, and accurate way to determine where your body needs additional support. Recovery rates for patients are 90% or better because it pinpoints the underlying causes of illness or less than optimal health.

  • A: I can’t tell you how many times patients come to me telling me they want to be healthy but they can’t afford it, even before I even tell them how much it is going to cost. So many times they have preconceived notions that it is going to cost thousands of dollars, which by the way in most cases it doesn’t, yet they have no problem spending money on the latest cell phone, gadget or designer clothing. The truth is that many people spend more money on taking care of their car then their own health. It comes down to investment priority; your own health should be your number one investment priority because without it, you have got nothing. You can always replace any material object but once you lose your health very seldom can you ever get it back. You should invest in your health. The old saying an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It doesn’t have to be expensive, it usually isn’t and then payoff is you get to live a full healthy life!

Insurance doesn’t cover testing and it isn’t so expensive that most patients can’t afford it. We make arrangements for all patients that want to be healthy. Will you have to make sacrifices? Probably so but in the long run it will be worth every penny. I haven’t had a patient that complied with the program that was unhappy with their outcome! In fact most patients have told me that I should charge more for my service.

If I accept your nutritional case, you can count on me to do everything in my power to help you achieve your health objectives, and to help you achieve a healthier, happier life.

  • Through an analysis of your body’s reflexes, we help you to determine the exact nutrients you need to formulate your diet in order to bring about balanced and improved health. We make these highly concentrated therapeutic formulations available to you in tablets, capsules, or in powdered form to “supplement” your current diet. That’s why they are called “food supplements”. Depending on your individual situation, we may also require that you make some specific changes in your diet & eating habits and in your routines in order to bring about the best possible results.

  • A: It’s easy! Call 510-796- 7000 today and my staff will get your information and send you the necessary online forms to fill out. Once you return the paperwork we will set up a free 15 minute consultation. This is so we can see if we can work with each other. If we are a good match. We will schedule an appointment to complete the testing procedures and develop a personal nutrition program and get you started on your way to optimum health right away.
